Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 27, 2026

Note: This policy is provided for transparency and may not constitute legal advice. Please have it reviewed by a qualified professional before relying on it for compliance.

This Privacy Policy explains how Cookember (“Cookember,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Cookember mobile application and related services (the “Service”). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide

  • Account and authentication information. When you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name, email address, and provider account identifier to create and identify your account. We may also store authentication tokens needed to keep you signed in or, for Apple Sign-In, to revoke the app authorization when you delete your account. We do not receive your social account password.
  • Profile and cooking preferences. Dietary preferences, measurement system, default servings, preferred cook time, and recipe complexity settings you choose in the app.
  • Recipe inputs. Ingredients, descriptions, voice transcripts, selected settings, and food photos you submit to generate recipes or parse ingredients.
  • Content you create. Recipes you generate, save, like, report, or make public, including generated recipe images and any report reason or note you provide for moderation.
  • Support communications. Information you send us when you contact support.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage data. Basic interactions with the app used to operate features like quotas and trending. For product analytics, PostHog EU Cloud receives a random app-installation identifier, static screen views, bounded feature interactions, and basic app/device information such as app version, operating system, device class, and locale. This analytics data is not connected to your Cookember account. We do not send your account identity, recipe content, search text, photos, or payment information to PostHog.
  • Subscription and purchase data. Subscription status, product identifiers, store, purchase and renewal dates, expiration or cancellation status, transaction identifiers, price, currency, and RevenueCat webhook payloads used for entitlement, reconciliation, and fraud-prevention records.
  • Diagnostics. Crash reports, error logs, device and app version information, release/environment data, and performance data to help us keep the app stable and secure.

Device permissions

  • Camera and photo library. Used only when you choose to scan ingredients from a food photo. Cookember processes the photo for ingredient parsing and does not store the uploaded scan as a standalone file after the request completes.
  • Microphone and speech recognition. Used only when you tap the microphone to dictate recipe ideas. Audio is processed by your device's speech-recognition service, and Cookember receives the resulting text transcript.
  • Notifications. Used to show local alerts when recipe generation completes or fails. We do not use notifications for advertising.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide core features — generating recipes and images from your ingredients, parsing food photos, handling voice-transcribed recipe ideas, and saving content to your account.
  • To authenticate you and keep your account secure.
  • To validate purchases, manage entitlements, and enforce usage limits associated with your subscription tier.
  • To power social features such as browsing, searching, liking, and trending public recipes.
  • To review reports and moderate public recipe content.
  • To diagnose problems, prevent abuse, and improve the Service.
  • To understand aggregate feature usage and improve the Service.
  • To respond to your support requests.

3. AI Processing

Recipe generation, image generation, and photo ingredient parsing are performed by third-party AI/LLM APIs, which may include but are not limited to services such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar services. Before Cookember sends user-provided content to these providers for AI features, the app asks for your AI data sharing permission. You can review or revoke that permission in the app under Settings > AI Data Sharing.

The data sent for AI features may include ingredients, recipe descriptions, cooking preferences, dietary restrictions, generated recipe details needed to create recipe images, and food photos you choose to provide. We do not intentionally include your account name, email, payment information, authentication tokens, contacts, or location in AI prompts or photo parsing requests, and we do not use your inputs to train our own models.

We share AI feature data only with providers that we require to provide the same or equal protection for that data as described in this Privacy Policy and their applicable service terms.

4. Third-Party Services

We rely on the following categories of service providers to operate Cookember:

  • Authentication: Google Sign-In and Apple Sign-In.
  • AI/LLM API providers: Third-party services such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar services, for recipe text, image, and vision features.
  • Speech recognition: Apple or Google platform speech services, when you use voice dictation.
  • Image storage: Cloudflare R2, where generated recipe images are stored.
  • Subscriptions & billing: RevenueCat together with the Apple App Store and Google Play, which process your subscription and payment. We do not receive or store your full payment card details.
  • Diagnostics: Sentry, which helps us collect crash, error, and performance data.
  • Product analytics: PostHog EU Cloud, which processes account-unlinked app interactions and basic app/device information on our behalf.
  • Font delivery: Google Fonts may be used to deliver app fonts at runtime.

These providers process data on our behalf or under their own privacy policies. We encourage you to review the policies of Google, Apple, AI/LLM API providers, Cloudflare, RevenueCat, Sentry, and PostHog for more detail on their practices.

5. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information and do not use your information for cross-app advertising tracking. We share information only with the service providers described above as needed to run the Service, when required by law or to protect our rights, or in connection with a business transfer. Recipes you choose to make public, along with the associated display name, are visible to other users until your account is deleted, after which retained public recipes are detached from your account.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account information and content for as long as your account is active. Uploaded food photos used for ingredient parsing are processed for that request and are not stored by Cookember as standalone files after the request completes. When you delete your account, we delete or de-identify your personal data and associated content, except for public recipes you chose to share, limited subscription and transaction records, diagnostics, or other records we must retain to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, reconcile purchases, or prevent abuse.

We retain account-unlinked product analytics only for as long as reasonably necessary to understand aggregate app usage and improve the Service. Because Cookember does not send a Cookember account identifier to PostHog, we generally cannot map this analytics history to your account when processing an account-deletion request.

7. Your Rights & Choices

  • Account deletion. You can delete your account from within the app, which removes your personal data and content as described above.
  • Device permissions. You can revoke camera, photo library, microphone, speech recognition, or notification permissions in your device settings.
  • AI data sharing. You can allow or revoke permission for Cookember to send user-provided AI feature data to third-party AI/LLM API providers in Settings > AI Data Sharing.
  • Subscriptions. You can manage or cancel paid subscriptions through your Apple App Store or Google Play account settings.
  • Access & correction. You may contact us to request access to or correction of your personal information.
  • Depending on your location, you may have additional rights under applicable privacy laws.

8. Children’s Privacy

Cookember is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us so we can remove it.

9. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. International Users

Your information may be processed and stored in countries other than your own, including by the service providers listed above. By using the Service, you consent to such processing.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes may be communicated through the app.
